TEXT: Installing under Debian is very easy. I like it cause it is one of the best
"true free" Linux distributions in the world (Gentoo is another good one).
Once you have the base system installed and all CDROMS in the apt database,
you need to install some packages in order to run linrad and do some command
line tweaking (funny, isn't it? :-)).
Do as root:
#apt-get install svgalibg1 #installs the "svgalib" library
# be careful, "svgalibgONE"
#apt-get install svgalibg1-dev # installs the development files for compiling
#apt-get install sndconfig #installs an easy sound card configuring software
#apt-get install aumix #installs a simple command line "graphic" mixer
#apt-get install nasm #installs the "nasm" assembler
Configuring some things:
#adduser username audio #it is not needed to run linrad as it runs as root,
#but it is a good idea for other sound software. It
#adds your username to the group "audio"in order to
#have premissions to access audio /dev/dsp*
#devices.
#Logout and login again for changes make effect.
#sndconfig #configure your sound card
#aumix #it starts the mixer. Configure "Line" as the
#"recording" device, and adjust the controls as needed.
Configure svgalib:
Edit file /etc/vga/libvga.config to match your mouse and video card devices. It
is very well self documented, so you will not have problems.
For me, the following settings work and the rest was untouched:
#########################################
#mouse unconfigured
mouse Microsoft
chipset S3
#########################################
Unpack linrad and compile it as usual (see Leif's page)(take a good beer or a cafee)
Start linrad. If it does not work, work harder in /etc/vga/libvga.config file.
If you have any problems, please tell me.
Ramiro, EA1ABZ.
